Program
The role and influence of civil society are undergoing significant change both in Finland and globally. The operating environment of civil society organisations is shaped not only by civic space itself, but also by broader global power structures and systems.
At the same time, discussions on power shifting, local ownership and the transformation of partnerships are prompting organisations to reconsider how power, responsibility and agency are distributed among different actors.
As the world becomes increasingly multipolar, the environment in which civil society operates is also changing. Africa’s growing significance in global politics, economics and international cooperation is challenging established assumptions while creating new opportunities for partnerships and collaboration.
The international keynote speech will be delivered by Fonteh Akum, Senior Fellow and Director of the Africa Program at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. In his presentation, he will explore changing global power structures, Africa’s evolving role in the world, and the implications of these developments for civil society organisations and international partnerships.
The programme will also feature findings from surveys conducted among Fingo’s member organisations and their partners on power shifting and the evolution of equal partnerships.
The session will conclude with a facilitated discussion on how changing power dynamics, structures and partnerships are affecting the daily work and future directions of civil society organisations. The objective of the seminar is to strengthen member organisations’ shared understanding of global structural changes and shifts in the civil society operating environment, create opportunities for peer learning, and identify how Fingo can continue to support its members in strengthening partnerships, agency and local ownership.
