Sexual and reproductive health and rights belong as much to persons with disabilities as to everyone else. Yet lack of knowledge and information often create barriers for access. Women and girls with disabilities also have a clearly higher risk of facing human rights violations such as forced sterilization or denied access to contraception, and they are more vulnerable to encounter violence including sexual and gender-based violence. Exclusion from sexual and reproductive health services as well as comprehensive sexuality education and information fundamentally violates the rights of persons with disabilities. Now is the time for action, and action starts with raising awareness.

Finland is a global leader in supporting sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls, including the right of persons with disabilities to live free from discrimination, stigma and violence. In order to bring these issues to the forefront, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in cooperation with UNFPA, the UN sexual and reproductive health agency, and NGO partners Väestöliitto, The Family Federation of Finland and Disability Partnership Finland are organizing the seminar The Right to Decide – ensuring sexual and reproductive health and rights for persons with disabilities. The seminar will discuss the various realities and challenges as well as best practices and ideas for solutions. We aim to examine the topic from a broad international angle involving researchers, civil society organizations, politicians and practitioners.

The event will consist of keynote speeches and panel discussions with participant interaction through questions and comments. The Under-Secretary of State for Development Policy Mr. Pasi Hellman will open the seminar and the UNFPA Representative to Iraq Dr. Rita Columbia has been invited to give key remarks. The event will be moderated by MP Saara-Sofia Sirén, vice chair of the Finnish All-Party Parliamentary Group on Sexual Rights and Development.

You are warmly welcome join the discussion in Helsinki or online! Breakfast will be served at the event.
